Welcome!

Welcome to We are AI, a learning circle developed by the Center for Responsible AI (R/AI) at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering in collaboration with Peer-to-Peer University (P2PU), and hosted by the Queens Public Library (QPL). Learning circles are facilitated study groups for people who want to meet regularly and learn about a topic together. There are no teachers or students in a learning circle—everyone learns together. We will be meeting online for 90 minutes a week for five weeks. Your participation in all five weeks is strongly encouraged.

To help NYU R/AI better understand how to make AI education engaging for the public, the learning circle features a research study. By joining this learning circle, you are agreeing to participate in the study. Read more about the study here.

If the course is full and you wish to hear about future offerings please fill out this interest form. QPL will contact you if a spot becomes available or when we offer this learning circle again.

Course materials we'll use

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to a growing world of sophisticated computer programs that “learn” from data in order to make decisions. Many of these AI systems are invisible to the public, yet the results of the decisions they make—or help humans make—have a substantial impact on modern life.

For many of us, AI primarily impacts our online behavior: it controls whose updates we read on Facebook, which products we select on Amazon, and which movies we watch on Netflix. AI is also increasingly used to make critically important decisions in all areas of life, including hiring,  education, public service, and even law enforcement.

Because of how important AI is in our lives, we should understand how it works so that we can control it together! This 5-week course introduces the basics of AI, discusses the social and ethical dimensions of its use, and empowers us to engage with how AI is used and governed. No math, programming skills, or existing understanding of AI are required!
